Improvement of the educational situation through the construction of a new secondary school (High School) in the community of Maduma. Partner project between MEDEA e.V., Tatort – Straßen der Welt e.V., Cologne & Caritas Eswatini, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) [read more].

Together with the Tatort Association from Cologne and Caritas Eswatini as our local partner, we were able to build a secondary school (high school) in the community of Maduma, which is to be put into operation this year. The project was financed by MEDEA e.V. and Tatort – Straßen der Welt e.V. with funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

School attendance is compulsory in Eswatini. The children attend primary school from grades 1-7 without paying school fees. School fees must be paid for the five classes of secondary school. However, the government invests very little in education and the corresponding infrastructure, especially in the rural regions. In “our" partner-community Maduma, after the construction of the primary school, another five classrooms, a latrine block with ten latrines, a science laboratory where biology, physics and chemistry lessons will take place in the future and a school-owned container library have been completed. In addition to the construction measures, MEDEA e.V. is providing clean drinking water by installing a fifth borehole on the school grounds.

There is also a lack of official support to develop the capacities of the existing school committees in the region. However, these school committees can make a great contribution to the structuring and further development of the education and school system. Therefore, as part of the BMZ project, six motivated school committees with a total of 40 participants have been trained on important topics; the workshops focused on possibilities for psychosocial support, domestic violence, gender equality, the economic empowerment of women, constitutional rights for women, and the prevention of human trafficking and child labour. Since MEDEA has been working closely with the community since 2013, we know that the new knowledge gained from these professional meetings spreads rapidly to the surrounding communities and to students. Important knowledge is thus multiplied among the population.

The number of pupils directly benefiting from the entire project amounts to about 550 children; of these, 252 children attend the existing primary school, and there is room for 300 children in the newly created secondary school. The Ministry of Education is responsible for equipping the classes as well as the laboratory with furniture and other necessary equipment. It is also the ministry’s responsibility to send the teachers. The school inspectors have assured MEDEA that about 80 children will be able to start classes at the secondary school this year. The age of these children is between 6 and 18 years, about 60 % are girls and 40 % boys.

It is with quiet pride that we can say four years after the successful opening of a primary school in 2017, a secondary school can be opened in 2021, so that the further development of the educational situation in the community of Maduma with support by MEDEA e.V. promises positive sustainability.
